24 Jan 2017 - Hoval Ltd - Combined Heat and Power and Factory Tour

Our next ASHRAE UK Midlands event will be hosted by Hoval Boilers at their factory in Newark.

Our speaker for the evening will be Robert Griffin who was responsible for the introduction of the Hoval's Combined Heat and Power program. Robert will deliver a CIBSE accredited presentation covering most aspects of design and installation of CHP in a UK environment. With RHI tariffs looking more and more attractive, and some local authorities actively mandating feasibility studies for CHP prior to approval of conventional heat generation, knowledge of CHP design and installation is becoming a must for design engineers and architects.

Roberts talk will be followed by a tour of the factory. Refreshments will be provided on arrival. Places are limited.

29 Nov 2016 - Loughborough University - The Relative Energy Efficiencies of Active Chilled Beams and Fan Coil Unit Systems

This paper describes the applications of Active Chilled Beams (ACB) and Fan Coil Units (FCU) in HVAC systems in the UK, with discussions of their typical design and operational parameters. By using dynamic simulation software, energy performance of systems using ACB and FCU are analyzed in detail. In particular, it looks at the benefits of using elevated water supply temperatures and free cooling opportunities with both systems.

26 Oct 2016 - University of Leeds - Data Centre Cooling - Minimising Environmental Impact

A joint Institute of Refrigeration and CIBSE Yorkshire Branch meeting, in association with ASHRAE UK Midlands Section.

11 Oct 2016 - Loughoborough University - ASHRAE Presidential Lecture by Tim Wentz, ASHRAE President

Tim Wentz, ASHRAE President for 2016-17, presented the Society theme of “Adapt Today to Shape Tomorrow”, which is based on the goal in our Society’s Strategic Plan to adapt. This goal relates to my personal history of moving from a slide rule in my early college days to a hand calculator and now a computer or smartphone as an example of the challenges and opportunities inherent in adapting to new technology. This presentation gave a special emphasis on how the initiatives and directives found within the theme will help our members adapt to our rapidly changing industry and help make them more effective, efficient and productive.

13 Sep 2016 - Loughborough University - "Energy Efficiency Refurbishment in UK Residences: the Work of Project ‘CALEBRE’" (joint with EI East Midlands and the CIBSE ASHRAE group)

Dennis Loveday, Professor of Building Physics, Loughborough University will present the main outcomes from Project ‘CALEBRE’ (Consumer-Appealing Low Energy technologies for Building REtrofitting) which concluded in 2013 at which time it was the largest research project investigating effectiveness and acceptability of energy refurbishment measures for UK houses.

14-06-16 - Low Carbon District heating using heat pumps - University of Birmingham (Joint seminar with IOR BSRA & CIBSE WM)

Dr Andy Pearson, ASHRAE Fellow and Group Managing Director of Star Refrigeration Ltd, described the concept, the difficulties faced and the ways in which they were overcome using one installation as a case study example. The case study, in Drammen, Norway was one of the projects named by ASHRAE in their citation for Dr Pearson’s award of the ASHRAE Fellowship at the 2016 Winter meeting in Orlando this year. 26-04-16 - Seminar - Post Occupancy Evaluation - Who Cares? - Loughborough Univiersity

In this talk, chartered building services engineer and founding director of Ollio Consultancy Edward Murphy provided an overview of his experiences in a number of award winning building projects, giving an insight into the post occupancy evaluation research that he has conducted over the past decade. He examines in detail how, as an industry, we design and deliver buildings, how we interface with client stakeholders, and the quality of the after sales care we pass on to our customers. flyer and video recording
